Stargate Hydrogen and OX2 Join Forces to Build Flagship Green Hydrogen Hub in Åland

In a move set to accelerate the Nordic hydrogen transition, Stargate Hydrogen and OX2 have announced a strategic partnership to develop one of the region’s first large-scale renewable hydrogen projects on the Åland Islands.

The collaboration brings together Stargate Hydrogen’s breakthrough ceramic-based electrolysis technology and OX2’s extensive renewable energy expertise to advance industrial-scale green hydrogen production across Northern Europe. The deal also signals the official market launch of Stargate’s industrial electrolyser platform — a milestone that positions the company among Europe’s leading hydrogen technology providers.

“This partnership is a major leap in our mission to deliver cost-competitive, large-scale green hydrogen,” said Marko Virkebau, CEO of Stargate Hydrogen. “The Åland facility will prove the scalability of our Aurora electrolyser while showcasing how hydrogen can anchor a clean energy economy in the Nordics.”

At the heart of the partnership is a 10 MW Aurora electrolyser system, which will form the core of the Åland production plant. Once commissioned, the project will:

  • Become one of the largest hydrogen production sites in the Nordic region,

  • Demonstrate European-made, next-generation hydrogen technology,

  • Establish Åland as a strategic clean energy hub, and

  • Support decarbonisation across local industry, road transport, and maritime shipping through the “green corridors” initiative.

Beyond the Åland project, the two companies will deepen cooperation through the ABB-led H₂ Springboard program—a €150 million national initiative to scale up hydrogen innovation in Finland. Stargate and OX2 will contribute their technology and project expertise to:

  • Develop modular, export-ready hydrogen systems,

  • Speed up testing and validation of new technologies, and

  • Tap into public innovation funding to strengthen Nordic competitiveness in the hydrogen economy.

“Renewable hydrogen is essential to achieving a fossil-free future,” said Anders Wiklund, Regional Manager of OX2 Åland. “Working with Stargate Hydrogen allows us to pair cutting-edge electrolyser technology with our renewable energy projects, enabling the rapid growth of a resilient hydrogen ecosystem across the Nordics.”
