Protium Expands UK Green Hydrogen Network Through Strategic Partnership with H-Power

Protium, one of the UK’s leading green hydrogen companies, has partnered with H-Power plc to strengthen the country’s renewable hydrogen infrastructure by expanding its distribution network and securing additional supplies of fuel-cell-grade green hydrogen.

At the heart of the announcement is the launch of a new hydrogen distribution hub at Dunsfold Park in Surrey, which becomes the fourth major logistics hub in Protium’s national network. The expansion creates what the company describes as the UK’s largest interconnected green hydrogen distribution system, designed to improve supply reliability for industrial and transport customers across the country.

Alongside the logistics expansion, Protium has entered into a commercial supply agreement with H-Power, providing access to additional ISO 14687 Grade D hydrogen, the purity standard required for proton exchange membrane (PEM) fuel cell applications. The agreement is intended to strengthen the availability of renewable hydrogen as demand continues to grow in sectors seeking to replace fossil fuels.

Unlike standalone hydrogen production sites, Protium’s network is designed as an integrated distribution system. By connecting multiple production facilities with strategically located supply hubs, the company can route hydrogen more efficiently, improving resilience while reducing logistical constraints that have historically limited the growth of the hydrogen market.

The new Surrey hub joins Protium’s existing infrastructure, which includes production and distribution assets such as the Pioneer 1, Pioneer 2 facility in Wales, and the South Coast Hydrogen hub in Dorset. Together, these sites form a nationwide network capable of supplying green hydrogen to customers across construction, manufacturing, heavy industry, and transport.

The company also has plans to further expand its footprint with future hydrogen production and distribution projects in Teesside and Cromarty, Scotland, supporting the continued development of the UK’s hydrogen economy.

Green hydrogen is expected to play an increasingly important role in decarbonising sectors where direct electrification is difficult, including heavy transport and industrial processes. However, widespread adoption depends not only on hydrogen production but also on the development of reliable storage and distribution infrastructure.

By combining new production capacity with a growing logistics network, Protium and H-Power aim to improve the commercial availability of green hydrogen while helping remove some of the supply chain barriers that have slowed market development.

The partnership reflects a broader trend across the UK hydrogen sector, where companies are increasingly focusing on integrated value chains that combine production, storage, transportation, and end-user delivery to accelerate the transition toward a low-carbon energy system.
