Gen2 Energy to Supply Green Hydrogen to Germany from Norway

Norwegian clean energy company Gen2 Energy AS has signed a term sheet to supply green hydrogen to German state-owned SEFE Securing Energy for Europe (SEFE) from its planned 100-MW production facility in Norway. This agreement represents a significant development in the energy partnership between Germany and Norway, ensuring a stable hydrogen supply from Norway to Europe’s largest economy.

Gen2 Energy’s CEO, Jonas Meyer, stated that the term sheet not only reaffirms their commitment to providing green hydrogen but also signifies a crucial step toward securing the necessary investments to bring the project to fruition.

This milestone follows the December 2022 memorandum of understanding (MoU) between the two companies, which laid the foundation for establishing a green hydrogen supply chain between Germany and Norway.

Gen2 Energy has already obtained a general building permit for its hydrogen plant in Mosjøen, Norway, marking the largest permit of its kind in the country to date. Before commencing construction, the company must secure project start-up permissions from the Vefsn municipality, where the plant will be located.

The Norwegian firm also enlisted UK engineering consultancy John Wood Group (Wood) as its front-end engineering design (FEED) contractor for the project last year. Once operational, the plant is expected to produce 42 tonnes of green hydrogen daily.

Founded in 2019, Gen2 Energy has ambitious plans to develop a portfolio of production sites with a total capacity of up to 1 GW in the coming years, with backing from UK-based HydrogenOne Capital Growth plc (LON:HGEN).

SEFE, formerly the German business of Russia’s Gazprom, was taken over by the German government in 2022. The company’s subsidiary, WINGAS, is representing it in the agreement with Gen2 Energy.
