Ohmium Partners with SwitcH2 for 300 MW Offshore Floating Ammonia Project

Ohmium International, a leader in green hydrogen technology, has signed a Term Sheet with SwitcH2 BV, a renewable energy joint venture that includes partners like BW Offshore, a global provider of offshore production solutions. The agreement outlines the development of advanced Proton Exchange Membrane (PEM) electrolyzer solutions for SwitcH2’s groundbreaking 300 MW offshore floating green hydrogen and ammonia project.

This innovative project, located off the coast of Southern Europe, will establish an industrial-scale floating facility for green hydrogen and ammonia production using Floating Production, Storage, and Offloading (FPSO) technologies. Ohmium will install 300 MW of its PEM electrolyzers on SwitcH2’s 268-meter FPSO vessel, which will produce up to 55,000 tonnes of green hydrogen and nearly 300,000 tonnes of green ammonia annually—enough to fuel several ocean-going vessels for a year.

The PEM electrolyzers will leverage nearshore solar and wind energy, along with treated seawater, to generate green hydrogen. This hydrogen will then be used in an on-deck ammonia synthesis unit, with the green ammonia offloaded to carriers for transportation. Supported by the Dutch government and approved in principle by the Norwegian certification agency DNV, the project expects to begin green ammonia production by 2029.

“We are delighted to have Ohmium’s advanced PEM electrolyzer solutions for this pioneering project,” said Bob Rietveldt, Director and Co-Founder of SwitcH2. “Their compact and modular technology is perfect for the space-constrained FPSO environment, providing high efficiency and flexible, rapid installation at scale.”

“Ohmium is excited to contribute to this transformative venture,” said Arne Ballantine, CEO of Ohmium. “We are eager to collaborate with SwitcH2 in advancing the green ammonia market, especially as a clean fuel for global shipping, and to help meet the growing demand for sustainable energy solutions.”
