SSAB and Parmaco Partner to Build the World’s First Fossil-Free Steel Concept Building

SSAB and Parmaco have signed a collaboration agreement with the goal of constructing the world’s first concept building made entirely from fossil-free steel in 2025. In this groundbreaking project, Parmaco plans to use pilot deliveries of fossil-free steel, produced with SSAB’s HYBRIT® technology, in the entire structure of the building. This marks the first time that all steel components in a building will be made from SSAB’s fossil-free steel.

Parmaco’s Fixcel Steel Cell Technology

“This partnership with Parmaco is an exciting opportunity to showcase the potential of fossil-free steel in the construction industry. With HYBRIT® technology, we are addressing one of the largest challenges in traditional steel production by virtually eliminating fossil CO2 emissions from the process. Together with partners like Parmaco, we can reduce the environmental impact of construction materials and demonstrate what is already possible today,” said Olavi Huhtala, Head of SSAB Europe.

Parmaco plans to start construction in early 2025, with completion expected later the same year. The building is designed to be a model for future sustainable construction projects globally, showing that it is possible to meet growing urban development demands without contributing to climate change.

Parmaco, long specialized in creating flexible spaces for schools, offices, and public sector projects, will use its unique Fixcel steel cell technology, which forms the framework of their buildings. This technology offers advantages such as high indoor air quality and low energy consumption.

“We are thrilled to partner with SSAB in this groundbreaking project. At Parmaco, we are committed to driving sustainable construction forward. We already have the technology, and soon we’ll have the right materials. Using SSAB’s fossil-free steel in our Fixcel solution is a natural step in our mission to create environmentally friendly buildings without compromising on quality or longevity,” said Jukka Joutsenkoski, CEO of Parmaco.

HYBRIT® Technology

Developed by SSAB in partnership with LKAB and Vattenfall, HYBRIT® technology replaces coal with hydrogen and fossil-free electricity in the iron ore reduction process. The result is water as a byproduct instead of CO2 emissions. SSAB’s fossil-free steel is a proof-of-concept that is now available for pilot deliveries to select partners.
