Finland Launches First Industrial Green Hydrogen Plant, Marking Milestone for Clean Energy Economy

Finland has officially entered the hydrogen economy with the inauguration of its first industrial-scale green hydrogen production facility, developed by P2X Solutions Oy in Harjavalta. The milestone event, held on March 26, 2025, was attended by President Alexander Stubb, who underscored Finland’s ambition to become a global clean energy leader.

“For Finland, this is not just a hydrogen plant—this is the beginning of a new era,” President Stubb declared. “We’re not waiting for change; we’re making it happen.”

The Harjavalta facility is the country’s first of its kind, and its launch marks a critical step toward industrial decarbonization. Powered by renewable electricity, the green hydrogen produced here will help reduce emissions across sectors like manufacturing, maritime, aviation, and heavy transport—key contributors to climate change.

Alongside the hydrogen plant, the site will also house a methanation plant that will later produce synthetic methane. These technologies together aim to replace fossil fuels with cleaner alternatives, aligning with EU regulations and Finland’s carbon neutrality targets.

According to projections, the hydrogen economy could account for 13% of Finland’s GDP by the mid-2030s, creating over 115,000 new jobs.

Herkko Plit, Founder and CEO of P2X Solutions, emphasized the importance of industry leadership:
“Finland is exceptionally well-positioned to become a clean hydrogen superpower. This facility is just the beginning. We are now focused on expanding our network of production sites across the country—including Joensuu and Oulu—with the goal of scaling up to 100 MW of production.”

Swiss energy company Alpiq, which acquired a majority stake in P2X Solutions in 2024, also celebrated the milestone. Amédée Murisier, Chairman of P2X Solutions and member of Alpiq’s Executive Board, stated:
“This project in Harjavalta is a tangible step toward integrating renewable energy into Europe’s wider energy system. It showcases the potential of hydrogen to drive sustainable growth.”

P2X Solutions aims to produce 40 MW of green hydrogen at its upcoming Joensuu plant and scale up to 100 MW in Oulu, signaling strong momentum for Finland’s hydrogen ambitions.

As regulatory changes loom, Plit urged other companies to act early:
“Businesses should not wait for regulations to kick in. By deploying green hydrogen now, they gain a competitive edge and ensure access to clean energy well into the 2030s.”

The Harjavalta inauguration marks a pivotal moment for Finland—one that could set the tone for the country’s energy transition and leadership in Europe’s emerging hydrogen economy.
