Fortum and P2X Solutions have signed a five-year Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) to support green hydrogen production at P2X Solutions’ Harjavalta plant in southwest Finland. The agreement ensures that the plant, which is ramping up production, operates in compliance with strict EU renewable hydrogen criteria (RFNBO).
Under the contract, Fortum will supply renewable electricity from its Finnish portfolio, along with Guarantees of Origin, to enable P2X Solutions to produce RFNBO-compliant green hydrogen. The agreement runs until the end of 2029 and marks a key milestone in Finland’s hydrogen transition.
Advancing Finland’s Green Hydrogen Industry
EU regulations require that renewable energy for green hydrogen production must be matched on a monthly basis until 2029, after which hourly matching will be mandated. This agreement ensures that P2X Solutions’ plant operates in full compliance with RFNBO standards, making it the first facility in Finland to produce green hydrogen under these regulations.
Urs Pennanen, Senior Vice President of Corporate Customers at Fortum, emphasized the significance of the collaboration:
“At Fortum, our strategic priority is to support clients in their decarbonization journey. This agreement with P2X Solutions showcases how collaboration can drive sustainable solutions. We are pleased to supply the plant with its initial volumes of renewable energy and contribute to Finland’s clean energy transition.”
Herkko Plit, CEO of P2X Solutions, highlighted the project’s impact:
“Our investment in Harjavalta is opening Finland’s green hydrogen market and supporting the shift to a carbon-neutral society. By leveraging Fortum’s renewable energy, we enable industries to adopt cleaner production methods. This partnership underscores the critical role of green hydrogen in reducing carbon emissions across multiple sectors.”
Paving the Way for a Carbon-Neutral Future
The Harjavalta green hydrogen plant is a pioneering project for Finland, setting the foundation for future hydrogen development and industrial decarbonization. The collaboration between Fortum and P2X Solutions strengthens the role of green hydrogen in achieving carbon neutrality and energy sustainability across industries.
