Norwegian Hydrogen Acquires Major Green Hydrogen Project in Rjukan from Aker Horizons

Norwegian Hydrogen, a leading producer of green hydrogen in the Nordics, has expanded its portfolio by acquiring Aker Horizons’ hydrogen project in Rjukan, Norway. This acquisition strengthens Norwegian Hydrogen’s position as a key player in the green energy transition, with plans to develop one of the largest hydrogen production facilities in the region. Aker Horizons retains the option to re-enter as an investor and active partner in the project at a later stage.

Key Highlights of the Rjukan Project

Norwegian Hydrogen has assumed a long-term power purchase agreement (PPA) with Tinn Energi, ensuring access to renewable energy under favorable terms. This arrangement creates a solid foundation for producing competitive, sustainable hydrogen. The project includes plans for a 25 MW hydrogen production plant, positioning it among the largest in the Nordics. There is also potential for further scaling and expansion in the future.

A Letter of Intent (LOI) has been signed with Nel for the delivery of a pressurized alkaline electrolysis plant. Nel’s technology development has been supported by the EU Innovation Fund, ensuring cutting-edge capabilities for the Rjukan project.

Rjukan is poised to become a central hub for clean hydrogen production, supplying industrial customers across the Nordics. The project builds on the solid groundwork laid by Aker Horizons to provide sustainable energy solutions to multiple industrial sectors.

Local Collaboration and Green Transition Leadership

Jens Berge, CEO of Norwegian Hydrogen, expressed the company’s excitement about the acquisition: “We are thrilled to take over this exciting project. It provides an excellent opportunity to strengthen our commitment to delivering innovative zero-emission solutions to both existing and new customers. We look forward to realizing the project in close collaboration with local stakeholders and contributing to the green transition.”
