Rheinmetall to Deliver Over 100 Hydrogen Transport Systems in Major Deal with European Green Hydrogen Producer

Rheinmetall has signed a landmark letter of intent (LoI) with a major European producer of renewable green hydrogen for the delivery of over 100 Multiple-Element Gas Containers (MEGCs) used for hydrogen storage and transport. Valued in the mid double-digit million-euro range, this deal marks Rheinmetall’s first large-scale order in the rapidly growing hydrogen mobility sector.

Under the agreement, Rheinmetall will supply MEGCs of various sizes, with the first units scheduled for delivery in early 2026. The containers are vital for enabling efficient, climate-neutral energy transport, particularly as Europe scales up its hydrogen economy.

“We are incredibly proud to have secured our first major customer in such a short time. This milestone helps further establish our new hydrogen storage and transport division,” said Philipp Engl, head of Rheinmetall’s INVENT H2 business unit.

Advanced Hydrogen Transport Technology

Rheinmetall’s MEGCs incorporate next-generation Type-IV hydrogen pressure tanks, capable of storing gas at pressures up to 700 bar. The design offers multiple innovations:

  • Shortened production time via optimized fiber winding

  • Reduced carbon fiber usage

  • Higher hydrogen storage capacity

  • Scalable container sizes ranging from 20 to 40 feet

  • Up to 1,000 kg of hydrogen at 380 bar pressure

Each system is delivered with smart service and maintenance support, providing customers with a complete, modular hydrogen logistics solution.

Supporting Europe’s Hydrogen Transition

The contract comes as Germany advances toward its National Hydrogen Strategy, aiming for climate neutrality by 2045. Hydrogen is set to play a central role in this transition, particularly in hard-to-abate sectors such as heavy industry and transport. Ensuring secure and efficient hydrogen delivery is critical to achieving this ambition.

Rheinmetall’s MEGCs are fully certified for transport across road (ADR), rail (RID), and inland waterways (ADN), enabling seamless integration into Europe’s logistics networks. The company also manufactures dedicated trailers to support safe container transport.

Ongoing discussions with additional customers signal strong interest in Rheinmetall’s hydrogen solutions and underscore the company’s strategic entry into the hydrogen sector.

Part of a Broader Hydrogen Strategy

Rheinmetall’s Power Systems division is a key player in advanced mobility and energy systems. Its portfolio includes:

  • Fuel cell balance-of-plant (BoP) components

  • Electrodes for electrolysers

  • Digital control technologies

  • And now, hydrogen storage and transport systems

This latest expansion reflects Rheinmetall’s commitment to advancing green hydrogen technologies across the value chain—from production to use—and supporting the decarbonization of transport and industry through cutting-edge engineering and innovation.
