Axpo and Rhiienergie Launch Switzerland’s Largest Green Hydrogen Production Facility

Axpo and electric utility Rhiienergie have inaugurated Switzerland’s largest green hydrogen production plant in the Graubünden canton, located next to the Reichenau hydropower plant in Domat/Ems. Announced on April 26, 2024, this facility is poised to play a crucial role in enhancing the future security of energy supply by integrating hydrogen into the national energy mix.

Constructed in about a year, the plant boasts a capacity of 2.5 megawatts and is expected to produce up to 350 tonnes of green hydrogen annually, which could potentially replace up to 1.5 million liters of diesel each year. The green hydrogen is generated through water electrolysis, utilizing renewable electricity sourced from the adjacent hydropower station, ensuring the process is entirely carbon dioxide emission-free. The hydrogen is then compressed within the facility for easy distribution to refueling stations and industrial consumers.

Christoph Brand, CEO of Axpo, remarked on the potential of this renewable energy carrier despite existing challenges, stating, “There are still a few hurdles to overcome, but we’re convinced of this green, sustainable and renewable energy carrier’s potential.”

The plant’s launch was celebrated with key figures from politics and business in attendance, including local officials and Dr. Carmelia Maissen, the Graubünden Cantonal Councillor and Energy Minister, who highlighted the plant’s alignment with the region’s climate and energy targets.

This pioneering facility, directly connected to the Reichenau hydropower plant, marks the first of its kind in Graubünden, setting a precedent for the climate-neutral production of green hydrogen in the region.

Christian Capaul, CEO of Rhiienergie, expressed his confidence in the significant role of green hydrogen in future energy solutions, describing the Domat/Ems facility as an exemplary flagship project. This initiative is part of a broader effort by Axpo to promote the hydrogen economy across Switzerland and Europe, demonstrating their commitment to sustainable and secure energy solutions.
