In a groundbreaking development for the green hydrogen economy, Anglo American Platinum, BMW Group South Africa, and Sasol have collaboratively introduced South Africa's first pilot fleet of BMW iX5 Hydrogen fuel cell electric vehicles (FCEVs). This initiative, unveiled at the South African Green Hydrogen Summit in October 2023, symbolizes a cross-industry effort to transition from industrial policy to tangible real-world applications, showcasing the growing importance of green hydrogen in global sustainability and energy security. The trial of these public road vehicles was announced during the Hydrogen Council’s Regional Meeting, hosted for the first time on the African continent in Sandton, Johannesburg, on February 12 and 13, 2024. This collaboration highlights each company's unique contribution to the value chain, demonstrating the burgeoning potential of the green hydrogen economy. The BMW iX5 Hydrogen represents the pinnacle of passenger hydrogen FCEV technology, being the most powerful model of its kind globally. The utilization of this small series fleet worldwide aims to gather crucial insights into hydrogen FCEV operation and customer experiences, further advancing the understanding of hydrogen's role in sustainable mobility. Peter van Binsbergen, CEO of BMW Group South Africa, emphasized the critical nature of cross-industry partnerships in realizing the vast potential of green hydrogen for decarbonization. He remarked, "Our collaboration with Anglo American Platinum and Sasol to launch the BMW iX5 Hydrogen fleet in South Africa underlines our belief in hydrogen as an essential element of the energy transition, offering a complementary solution to our battery-electric mobility offerings." Dr. Juergen Guldner, BMW Group General Program Manager for Hydrogen, reflected on the four-year development journey of the BMW iX5 Hydrogen, noting its global tour that began in Antwerp, Belgium, in 2023. He highlighted the complementarity of hydrogen vehicles to BMW's battery electric vehicle lineup, pointing out their quick refueling capability and suitability for customers without convenient charging options. Prakashim Moodliar, Head of Projects at Anglo American Platinum, underscored the importance of partnerships in building a local and sustainable hydrogen economy. "Our partnership with BMW Group South Africa and Sasol is a testament to our commitment to fostering green mobility in South Africa, utilizing Platinum Group Metals to enable this new industrial sector both locally and globally," said Moodliar. This week's launch not only marks a significant milestone in South Africa's green mobility journey but also showcases the world's most powerful passenger fuel cell electric vehicle in action, signifying a major step forward in the development of a green mobility ecosystem.

Marking a significant stride towards agricultural sustainability, the Ugandan Government, through its Ministry of Energy and Mineral Development (MEMD), has forged a pivotal partnership with Industrial Promotion Services (Kenya) Limited (IPS) and the Norwegian green energy firm, Westgass Internasjonal AS. This collaboration, supported by Norfund, the Norwegian Government’s Investment Fund for developing countries, is set to pioneer the production of green hydrogen-based fertilizers in Karuma, Kiryandongo District, within the Bunyoro sub-region. This initiative is a critical component of the Presidential Advisory Committee on Exports and Industrial Development (PACEID)'s strategy to mitigate food and income insecurity by replacing imported fertilizers with locally produced, eco-friendly alternatives. IPS, the infrastructure and industrial development arm of the Aga Khan Fund for Economic Development (AKFED), part of the Aga Khan Development Network (AKDN), and Westgass Internasjonal AS, recognized for its green energy solutions, will utilize cutting-edge green hydrogen technology. This project aligns perfectly with the Ugandan Government's import substitution strategy, aiming to bolster food security and improve income levels nationwide. The initiative has also secured backing from development financial institutions and the Government of Norway, highlighting a shared commitment to fostering green growth and expanding the continent's green energy capabilities. Galeb Gulam, CEO of Industrial Promotion Services, expressed excitement over this collaborative effort, emphasizing its role in climate action and sustainable development. "This project is a testament to our dedication to fostering low-carbon economic growth and supporting sustainable agricultural practices," Gulam noted. Kinar Kent, CEO of Westgass, echoed these sentiments, underlining the project's significant contribution to reducing fertilizer imports and addressing food and income security challenges. "This partnership underscores our commitment to environmental sustainability and the economic empowerment of Uganda," Kent added. Odrek Rwabwogo, Chairman of PACEID, highlighted the project's anticipated impact on Uganda's export potential, "By leveraging Uganda's rich resources and innovative solutions, we aim to boost the agricultural sector towards our $6 billion export target, benefiting farmers, communities, and the nation." The Norwegian Ambassador, Anne Kristin Hermansen, lauded the investment as a prime example of Norwegian public and private sectors uniting to support sustainable projects that will leave a lasting mark on Uganda’s economy. “This investment aligns with our priorities of enhancing Uganda’s food security while tapping into the country’s renewable resources,” Hermansen stated. This groundbreaking partnership marks the beginning of an innovative journey to revolutionize Uganda's agricultural sector through green hydrogen technology, demonstrating the power of public-private collaborations in achieving sustainable growth. GE Vernova's Gas Power business (NYSE:GE) and EnergyAustralia have proudly announced the inauguration of the Tallawarra B Power Station in New South Wales, Australia. This pioneering facility, powered by GE Vernova’s advanced 9F.05 gas turbine, stands as Australia's first commercial operation dual-fuel power plant capable of utilizing both natural gas and hydrogen. By 2025, EnergyAustralia aims to operate the plant on a blend of 5% green hydrogen and natural gas, contingent on the development of a sufficiently large and scalable hydrogen industry. Tallawarra B is set to become the first 9F gas turbine worldwide to run on this innovative fuel mix. The power station is designed to provide up to 320 MW of dispatchable power, enhancing the reliability and sustainability of New South Wales' energy supply. This comes at a critical time following the closure of the Liddell coal-fired plant in April 2023, with Tallawarra B poised to help compensate for the lost capacity and offer crucial flexibility during peak energy demands by utilizing a green hydrogen blend to reduce emissions. Mark Collette, Managing Director of EnergyAustralia, emphasized the significance of Tallawarra B as a keystone in the region's energy transition, marking the first gas-fired power station built in New South Wales in over a decade. "Tallawarra B will provide essential support to the grid, especially as we integrate more renewable sources and phase out coal power," Collette said. EnergyAustralia is also preparing for the future by upgrading its adjacent Tallawarra A station to enhance its efficiency and capacity, enabling it to use up to 30% hydrogen as fuel, aligning with their ambition to achieve net-zero emissions by 2050. The 9F turbine at the heart of Tallawarra B exemplifies dual-fuel technology's ability to support the transition to a lower carbon future. GE Vernova, with its comprehensive experience in gas and renewable energy technologies, is at the forefront of enabling the hydrogen value chain. Ramesh Singaram, President and CEO, Asia of GE Vernova’s Gas Power, highlighted the project's role in combatting climate change, "Tallawarra B Power Station underscores gas technology's potential in achieving carbon reduction and ensuring a stable and reliable electricity supply." Located alongside the existing Tallawarra A gas plant, the Tallawarra B Power Station integrates state-of-the-art technology including an A78 generator and a Mark* Vie control system, enhancing installation efficiency and serviceability. GE Vernova's commitment to hydrogen innovation is evident in its portfolio, capable of accommodating hydrogen levels from 5% up to 100%. With a history of gas turbine excellence since 1991 and a goal to develop technology for 100% hydrogen fuel by 2030, GE Vernova is poised to lead the industry towards greener energy solutions. For over a century, GE has been a part of Australia's industrial landscape, with more than 140 gas turbines currently in operation across the country. The Tallawarra B project represents a significant step forward in using hydrogen to lower carbon emissions in the power sector, showcasing a model for future energy projects globally.
