Eternal Power Secures Land for 80 MW Green Hydrogen Production Plant in Dummerstorf, Germany

Hamburg-based hydrogen company, Eternal Power, has announced the development of a new green hydrogen production plant in Dummerstorf, located 10 kilometers south of Rostock. The company has secured usage rights for a five-hectare plot of land where an 80 MW electrolysis plant is planned for completion by 2028. Once operational, the plant is expected to produce 8,000 tons of green hydrogen annually, with plans for expansion to 400 MW in the future.

This project is considered a flagship initiative for Germany’s green hydrogen market. Eternal Power has already secured initial commitments from buyers and signed a preliminary contract worth over €2.3 billion, which is seen as a crucial step in scaling the green hydrogen market in the region.

Green Hydrogen: A Key to Germany’s Energy Transition

Germany’s climate goals heavily rely on the rapid development of a green hydrogen market, particularly in energy-intensive sectors such as shipping, aviation, and heavy industries like chemicals and steel. Andreas Rimkus, hydrogen representative of the SPD parliamentary group, highlighted the importance of domestic green hydrogen production in boosting both energy and industry. Eternal Power’s project aligns with this vision, supported by substantial government backing, including half a billion euros in funding approved by the Federal Ministry of Economics for projects in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania.

Dummerstorf’s commitment to green energy was a major factor in Eternal Power’s decision to build the plant there. The municipality had already incorporated green hydrogen into its industrial area development plans, creating an attractive, future-proof location for climate-neutral production. “We are proud to play a pioneering role in the European energy market alongside Eternal Power,” said Dummerstorf’s Mayor, Jürgen Sprank.

Green Hydrogen Production Powered by Offshore Wind and Solar

Eternal Power is confident that the Dummerstorf site will enable competitive green hydrogen production due to its proximity to offshore wind farms, high-voltage connections, industrial zones, and access to the hydrogen core network. Robert Meitz, co-founder and COO of Eternal Power, noted that the site’s access to abundant green electricity from offshore wind and PV systems will help keep production costs low. Additionally, the company has developed proprietary software that optimizes the integration of various renewable energy sources, ensuring high plant utilization while minimizing electricity prices.

Planned Expansion to 400 MW by 2030

The first phase of the plant is set to go online by the end of 2028, with a new hydrogen pipeline coming into operation. Plans for a second expansion, increasing capacity to 400 MW by 2030, are already underway. The expansion will require upgrades to the high-voltage grid, which are currently being planned by the network operator 50Hertz. Eternal Power has confirmed that the necessary land for this expansion has been secured, with strong demand from consumers already in place.
