Gen2 Energy Secures 195 MW Grid Capacity for Large-Scale Liquid Hydrogen Project in Northern Norway

Gen2 Energy has achieved a major development milestone after receiving confirmation of a 195-megawatt grid capacity reservation for its planned green hydrogen facility at Nesbruket in Vefsn municipality, northern Norway. The decision provides the electrical foundation needed to advance the project toward construction and long-term expansion.

Of the total reserved capacity, 87 MW is available through the existing power grid, while the remaining capacity will be enabled through planned grid reinforcements in the Helgeland region, where national transmission operator Statnett plays a central role. The confirmation secures sufficient power for the project’s initial phase and establishes a clear pathway to full-scale deployment.

With the first phase in place, the Nesbruket facility is designed to produce up to 30 tonnes of liquefied green hydrogen per day. Over time, production will be expanded in line with grid development to utilise the full 195 MW capacity. The hydrogen will be supplied primarily to the maritime sector, where zero-emission fuels are critical to achieving deep cuts in greenhouse gas emissions.

“This is a crucial step for both Gen2 Energy and the Mosjøen project,” said Lena Halvari, CEO of Gen2 Energy. “We have worked methodically and with long-term focus to reach this point. The grid capacity reservation gives us the predictability required to move confidently toward a final investment decision and the start of construction. The project will create value locally—during development, construction, and once the plant is fully operational.”

Halvari also underlined the strategic importance of hydrogen for shipping: “If the maritime sector is to decarbonise at scale, access to green hydrogen is essential. Securing power capacity at Nesbruket brings us significantly closer to making that a reality.”

Development work at the site is already well advanced. The project will be implemented in phased stages, allowing capacity to grow in step with demand and infrastructure availability. Once completed, the facility is expected to stimulate new industrial activity, employment, and long-term economic growth in the region.

Gen2 Energy is a Norwegian hydrogen developer with four project locations along the coast and a total development portfolio of 995 MW. The company’s strategy focuses on building a fully integrated hydrogen value chain, with particular emphasis on maritime applications. If realised, its projects could deliver substantial emission reductions for Norwegian shipping and contribute meaningfully to both national and EU climate targets.

The company has expressed its appreciation for the strong local cooperation behind the project, thanking Mosjøen og Omegn Næringsselskap (MON) and Vefsn municipality for their constructive engagement. Gen2 Energy also looks forward to continued collaboration with Linea and Helgeland Kraft as the project progresses toward execution.
