GreenGo Energy has signed its first African agreement, marking a significant milestone in its global green hydrogen strategy. The agreement, signed by Mauritania’s Minister of Energy and Petroleum, Mr. Mohamed Khaled, and GreenGo Energy CEO, Karsten Nielsen, grants the company access to over 100,000 hectares of land near Nouakchott for the development of the Megaton Moon Green Hydrogen Project.
A Game-Changer for Green Hydrogen in Africa
The €1.4 billion project aims to position Mauritania as a key player in the global green hydrogen economy. With its abundant solar and wind resources, strategic coastal location, and Africa’s first Green Hydrogen Code, the country offers an ideal environment for large-scale hydrogen production.
“This is a landmark moment for GreenGo Energy,” said Karsten Nielsen, CEO of GreenGo Energy. “Mauritania’s unique combination of renewable resources and progressive policies creates a compelling opportunity for investment. We are honored to contribute to this transformative journey.”
Minister Mohamed Khaled added: “This agreement underscores the private sector’s confidence in Mauritania’s green hydrogen potential, despite global uncertainties. It will help position our country as a leader in the energy transition.”
Phased Development & Large-Scale Production
The Megaton Moon Project will be developed in phases to align with market demand and infrastructure readiness between 2029 and 2033. At full capacity, it will feature:
✅ 6 GW of electrolysis
✅ 6.8 GW of onshore wind
✅ 6.3 GWp of solar PV
✅ Annual production of approximately 1.5 million tons of green ammonia
Phase 1, set for completion by the end of 2029, will include:
🔹 500 MW of electrolysis
🔹 600 MW of onshore wind
🔹 600 MWp of solar PV
🔹 Production of 339,000 tons of green ammonia per year
“Scaling in phases allows us to adapt to supply chain challenges while securing long-term offtake agreements,” said Anders Heine Jensen, Head of PtX at GreenGo Energy.
Unlocking Socioeconomic Growth
Beyond energy production, the project aims to drive sustainable development in Mauritania by:
🌍 Providing low-cost green energy for industrial growth
💧 Addressing water shortages through desalination
🎓 Launching education and vocational training programs in partnership with Zealand Business College (ZBC) in Denmark
🏗️ Creating new job opportunities and boosting the local economy
“This project is about more than energy—it’s about transforming communities,” said Ibrahima Diagana, Country Manager at GreenGo Energy in Mauritania.
A Vision for a Sustainable Future
Financed through GreenGo Energy’s partnership model, Megaton Moon will attract large-scale investors with proven expertise in renewable energy. Delivered via GreenGo Energy’s 360-degree full-service platform, the project will be a blueprint for sustainable industrial development in Africa.
“We’re not just building a project—we’re building a future where abundant green energy and water catalyze long-term economic and social progress for Mauritania,” concluded Karsten Nielsen.
