Kintore Hydrogen: Statera Energy’s Pioneering 3GW Green Hydrogen Project to Enhance UK’s Energy Security

Statera Energy has unveiled plans to construct the UK’s first utility-scale green hydrogen facility in Aberdeenshire—Kintore Hydrogen. This landmark project aims to bolster the UK’s energy security by leveraging surplus renewable energy to produce green hydrogen, with a capacity to save up to 1.4 million tonnes of CO2 annually when fully operational at 3 GW.

Once completed, Kintore Hydrogen will be the largest green hydrogen project in Europe. The initial 500 MW of capacity is expected to come online by 2028. At full scale, Kintore Hydrogen will significantly contribute to the UK’s renewable energy landscape, balancing the power system and supporting the transition to cleaner energy sources like offshore wind. Moreover, it will play a critical role in decarbonizing some of the UK’s most carbon-intensive sectors, including heavy industry and flexible power generation.

Supporting the UK’s Green Skills and Economy

The project is anticipated to be a major driver for the UK’s green skills transition, creating up to 3,500 jobs during construction and up to 200 permanent high-quality roles once operational. This initiative is projected to deliver a substantial economic benefit of £1 billion by 2035.

Tom Vernon, CEO of Statera Energy, commented:
“We are delighted to have submitted plans for Kintore Hydrogen, the UK’s first utility-scale green hydrogen project. If approved, Kintore Hydrogen could significantly support the growth of the UK’s hydrogen economy, contribute to energy independence, and accelerate the development of domestic supply chains.”

Balancing the Grid and Harnessing Surplus Renewable Power

The Electricity System Operator forecasts a potential £5 billion savings for consumers if flexible demand, such as hydrogen electrolysers, is strategically placed behind electricity network bottlenecks in Scotland. Kintore Hydrogen’s location is advantageous as it sits behind these bottlenecks and is close to North Sea wind power and water resources, making it well-positioned to convert surplus wind energy into green hydrogen.

Vernon further explained:
“Over the coming years, the increase in wind generation across the UK will make electrolysers crucial for capturing wind energy that would otherwise be wasted. Kintore Hydrogen will convert this surplus wind power to green hydrogen, making it available when and where it’s needed most.”

Maximizing Hydrogen’s Potential

The location and scale of Kintore Hydrogen allow it to fully capitalize on the benefits of green hydrogen. By utilizing surplus wind power, the project aims to lower hydrogen production costs, balance the national grid, enhance energy security, and support the decarbonization of industries that are challenging to electrify.
