Luxcara, a leading German asset manager for clean energy infrastructure, is making a significant investment in the Bodø Hydrogen Project, one of Norway’s first large-scale green hydrogen production facilities. Located at Langstranda in the Bodø municipality, the project will play a pivotal role in advancing Norway’s clean energy transition.
Project Highlights
Phase 1 will see the installation of a 20 MW electrolyzer, with an annual production capacity of up to 3,100 tons of green hydrogen.
Phase 2 has plans for an additional 10 MW, bringing the total electrolyzer capacity to 30 MW, capable of producing approximately 4,800 tons of green hydrogen annually.
The hydrogen will be supplied to Torghatten Nord’s Vestfjorden ferry connection, starting operations in 2026, marking the first facility in Northern Europe to deliver pressurized green hydrogen directly to a maritime vessel.
Investment and Development Timeline
Luxcara and GreenH AS secured NOK 129 million (approximately EUR 11 million) in funding from Enova, a Norwegian state-owned enterprise under the Ministry of Climate and Environment. With the funding secured, Luxcara has made its final investment decision, and preparatory work at the site has begun. The project is expected to reach commercial operations (COD) by 2026.
Luxcara acquired a majority stake in the Bodø Hydrogen Project in early 2024, while GreenH AS retains a minority stake. This collaboration builds on a successful partnership established over the past year, combining Luxcara’s investment expertise with GreenH’s local project development capabilities.
Luxcara’s Growing Green Hydrogen Portfolio
The Bodø Hydrogen Project is Luxcara’s second green hydrogen facility, complementing their involvement in the Hamburg Green Hydrogen Hub (HGHH) in Germany. At the former Moorburg coal-fired power plant site, Luxcara and consortium partner Hamburger Energiewerke are building a 100 MW green hydrogen infrastructure to decarbonize Hamburg’s harbor industry. These projects underline Luxcara’s commitment to driving the global clean energy transition.
Leadership Perspectives
Halvor Nessen, Investment Manager at Luxcara, highlighted the project’s strong foundation:
“The Bodø project brings together all the critical elements for a successful green hydrogen initiative: a committed team, proximity to demand like Torghatten Nord, access to affordable renewable power, and additional value streams from residual heat and oxygen. It is pioneering projects like this that will set the stage for green hydrogen’s first wave of success.”
Morten Solberg Watle, CEO of GreenH, added:
“Hydrogen is the fuel of the future. With construction underway, the Bodø facility will be the first of its kind in Northern Europe, signaling a new chapter for the European green hydrogen market.”
Advancing Green Energy in Northern Europe
The Bodø Hydrogen Project represents a landmark step in scaling green hydrogen infrastructure in Norway and Northern Europe. Its innovative design and strategic partnerships set the stage for a cleaner, more sustainable future for the region.
