PowerCell Group Partners with Australian Aviation Firm for Hydrogen-Powered VTOL Aircraft Concept Study

PowerCell Group has entered an agreement with an Australian aviation company to conduct a concept study for a vertical take-off and landing (VTOL) aircraft with minimal emissions. This study includes an order valued at SEK 7 million for engineering work to specify the hydrogen fuel cell system for the aircraft’s powertrain, with the goal of developing prototypes for commercial use.

The electric VTOL segment is an emerging market with vast potential for commercial applications. Hydrogen fuel cells are particularly well-suited for VTOL aircraft, given their high energy-to-weight ratio. This allows hydrogen-electric VTOLs to achieve significant payload capacity, impressive range, minimal emissions, and low noise levels.

Under this agreement, PowerCell will collaborate with the Australian aviation company to design and specify the fuel cell system that will power the VTOL prototypes. The engineering study, valued at SEK 7 million, will outline the specifications for the aircraft’s fuel cell powertrain, laying the groundwork for prototype development and long-term commercial plans.

“We are excited about this collaboration with a leading Australian VTOL company,” said Richard Berkling, CEO of PowerCell Group. “Our fuel cell solution, with its high energy density, is well-positioned to address the challenges of climate-friendly aviation and support the decarbonization of the industry. With more than 20 projects in various stages within the aviation segment, we are pleased to see another aviation initiative come to life.”

This partnership signifies a significant step in advancing the use of hydrogen fuel cells in the VTOL market, contributing to a more sustainable and greener future for the aviation industry.
