Statkraft Transfers Gothenburg Hydrogen Project to HYDS as Part of Strategic Refocus

Statkraft has agreed to sell its hydrogen development in the Port of Gothenburg to the Norwegian hydrogen company Hydrogen Solutions AS (HYDS), transferring full ownership of Statkraft Hydrogen Göteborg AB to the new owner. The transaction ensures continuity for one of Sweden’s most advanced port-based green hydrogen initiatives while aligning with Statkraft’s revised strategic priorities.

The Gothenburg project is planned as a 5–10 MW electrolysis facility designed to supply between two and four tonnes of green hydrogen per day. Its primary focus is on decarbonising heavy transport and maritime operations, in close collaboration with Swedish vehicle manufacturers and other industrial partners. Once operational, the plant could cut carbon dioxide emissions from the transport sector in the Västra Götaland region by up to 60 tonnes per day, equivalent to roughly 20,000 tonnes annually.

The divestment follows Statkraft’s strategic decision, announced earlier this year, to exit the hydrogen business across all markets. The company is sharpening its focus on its core renewable energy activities, including hydropower, wind power and solar energy.

“The sale of the Gothenburg hydrogen project is fully in line with our updated strategy,” said Jakob Norström, CEO of Statkraft Sweden. “We are pleased to hand over the project to a capable and dedicated owner who can take it forward and realise its potential.”

The project has already secured significant public support, having been awarded SEK 37.4 million from Klimatklivet out of a total approved funding envelope of SEK 74.7 million. This support, administered by the Swedish Environmental Protection Agency, remains attached to the project following the change in ownership, providing a solid financial foundation for further development.

HYDS plans to advance the project toward a final investment decision during the first half of 2027, with the ambition of starting hydrogen production by the end of 2029. According to the company, the location in the Port of Gothenburg offers a unique opportunity to serve a broad range of customers, including shipping, mobility, construction and industrial users.

“We are very pleased to take over this project and look forward to developing it further in close cooperation with customers and partners,” said Frode Kirkedam, CEO of HYDS. “For the maritime sector in particular, access to green hydrogen in a strategically important port like Gothenburg is essential. We look forward to working with the Port of Gothenburg, Göteborg Energi, Klimatklivet and relevant authorities to realise this project and to grow in step with market demand.”

With the transition to HYDS, the Gothenburg hydrogen project remains on track to become a key building block in Sweden’s emerging green hydrogen infrastructure, supporting the shift to zero-emission transport and shipping.
