Fortescue, in collaboration with the Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA) and a coalition of government bodies, research institutions, and industry stakeholders, has successfully carried out a pioneering trial of using ammonia, blended with diesel, as a marine fuel. This trial, a global first conducted aboard the Singapore-flagged vessel Fortescue Green Pioneer in the Port of Singapore, marks a significant stride towards sustainable maritime fuel solutions. The trial involved fueling the Fortescue Green Pioneer with liquid ammonia sourced from the Vopak Banyan Terminal on Jurong Island. This achievement is underpinned by the vessel's recent approvals: a flag approval from the Singapore Registry of Ships (SRS) and a “Gas Fueled Ammonia” notation from the classification society DNV, enabling the use of an ammonia-diesel blend as marine fuel. Ammonia, primarily used in agriculture and industrial processes, is gaining traction as a carrier for hydrogen, offering a promising avenue for transporting energy to power generation sectors and as a cleaner marine fuel. The Fortescue Green Pioneer's journey towards ammonia power began in 2022 with the successful modification of a four-stroke engine to utilize an ammonia-diesel mix at Fortescue’s testing facility in Perth, Western Australia. Subsequent conversion efforts at Seatrium’s Benoi yard included equipping the vessel with necessary gas fuel delivery and safety systems, allowing two of its four engines to run on the ammonia-diesel mixture. This initiative supports the vessel's propulsion and represents a leap towards commercializing ammonia-fueled marine engines. In addition to technological innovations, extensive safety, and training preparations were undertaken in Singapore. These efforts included Hazard Identification and Operability Study workshops, gas-specific emergency response training, and the development of an ammonia plume model to ensure safe operations. An Emergency Operations Centre was also established to oversee the fuel trial operations, enhanced by a drone-enabled live feed. The successful completion of this fuel trial not only showcases Fortescue and Singapore's commitment to decarbonizing maritime operations but also positions the Port of Hirtshals as a pioneering hub for green hydrogen integration. This initiative underscores the collaborative spirit driving the transition towards a more sustainable and innovative maritime industry, heralding a new era of green shipping solutions.

The SeaShuttle project, an innovative venture aiming to develop two hydrogen-powered, remotely controlled, and autonomous-ready containerships by 2025, has successfully secured NOK150 million (approximately €15M) in funding from ENOVA, a Norwegian state enterprise dedicated to promoting environmentally friendly energy. This initiative is spearheaded by Samskip, a leader in multimodal transport and logistics, in partnership with marine robotics expert, Ocean Infinity. Designed to operate emissions-free between Oslo Fjord and Rotterdam, the SeaShuttle ships will be equipped with a 3.2MW hydrogen fuel cell system. ENOVA, operating under Norway’s Ministry of Climate and Environment, supports the transition to greener energy consumption and production, endorsing sustainable energy technologies. Unveiled at Nor-Shipping 2022 in Oslo, the collaboration between Samskip and Ocean Infinity focuses on zero-emission maritime logistics. Are Gråthen, CEO of Samskip Norway, expressed pride in leading the SeaShuttle initiative, highlighting its alignment with the company's commitment to green logistics. The ENOVA funding marks a significant step towards realizing emissions-free container shipping and advancing autonomous and remote-operated shipping technologies. Christoffer Jorgenvag, CCO of Ocean Infinity, emphasized the role of innovative technologies in establishing green corridors and transforming maritime operations towards sustainability. He thanked ENOVA for endorsing their vision, allowing the project to progress swiftly. The financial backing enables the contracting of two new 500TEU ships with hydrogen fuel-based propulsion, supported by diesel-electric systems as a backup. The project champions the belief in the future affordability and availability of green hydrogen in Norway, aiming to make zero-emission shortsea shipping competitive with existing methods. Kari-Pekka Laaksonen, Group CEO of Samskip, reiterated the company's dedication to sustainability, viewing the SeaShuttle project as a key milestone in achieving zero-emission logistics.

Further strengthening its financial foundation, Sunfire has secured a notable credit facility from the EIB, reinforcing the company's strategy of financial diversification and signaling its capability to thrive in the venture debt market. This support from the EIB, alongside robust investor backing, empowers Sunfire to scale up production of next-generation electrolyzers, contributing to Europe's industrial future-proofing efforts. Sunfire's advanced electrolysis technologies, including pressurized alkaline and high-temperature solid oxide systems, are instrumental in the transition to renewable energy, enabling efficient and scalable green hydrogen production. The company aims to deploy several gigawatts of electrolysis capacity by 2030, targeting large-scale green hydrogen projects and cementing its leading position in the global market.
